Christoph Poppen

Sixteen international Fellows came to Hamburg for ten weeks in September 2012 to learn how they can use the power of music to inspire people.

Challenge Phase (20.09.2012 - 02.12.2012)

During the ten weeks in Hamburg, the Fellows learned how to explore the background of a piece and then rehearsed it with creative methods and with people of different skill levels under the guidance of the Project Friend Christoph Poppen, one of Germany’s foremost conductors.

The focus was on learning how to approach a piece of music. The Fellows benefited from his experience in working with orchestras all around the world and from his long teaching career.

Other Experts from the music field familiarized the Fellows with breath control, singing, project and cultural management: Dr. Matthias Hülsen (Director Mecklenburg Vorpommern Festival) launched an individual course concerning choir work with kids, vocal coach Martin Netter (UDK Berlin, Vocal Coach, Innsbrucker Festwochen) and Soprano Isabelle Heiss (Vokalakademie Berlin) sought to unify Fellows of different backgrounds and skill levels and Prof. Ulrike Jungmair (Mozarteum Salzburg) guided the Fellows through the Orff-approach in musical education.

Every D&F Academy project is centered on a Challenge, a hands-on task, which the Fellows have to accomplish during the project: In the Music Project the Fellows learned hands-on about innovative methods of teaching and creating music in a group with a focus on traditional songs that have inspired change in the world.

The Fellows used the knowledge they had gained in rehearsing songs with groups and organizing musical events to create a Music Camp Day in Hamburg with youth groups of different music skill levels. For this day, the World Sound Concert, the Fellows prepared several songs themselves as well as with those groups. They used traditional songs and music from their home countries to celebrate with the youth groups and the audience the power of music. The focus during the Challenge Day was put on singing, but the workshops and performances also included instruments from all over the world.

Implementation Phase (02.12.2012 - 02.10.2013)

The 10-week Challenge Phase in Hamburg is followed by the 10-month Implementation Phase in the respective Fellow's home country. During this phase each Fellow will implement their DreamPlan, for example a social music event or a children's music initiative of his or her own, with the support of the D&F Academy. Throughout that time, Fellows will take part in an online curriculum on the D&F Cloud, through which we will coach, mentor and support them to get their own project off the ground!
